Default 4l60e Trans

Hey guys

Just a quick question, my firebird has the 4l60e trans in it and if i was to drip the shifter into say 2nd or 3rd the trans does not shift down. If i drop it down a gear and step on the gass it wont pull till i hit the rpm's that it should for that gear. i was wondering if there was something like a programmer i can buy or something to make it so i can shift it down. If this does not make sence to anyone then just let me know i will try to clerify.

Thanks for any help

Shawn

You DO NOT WANT TO MANUALLY SHIFT A STOCK 4L60E!!!!!! You will break it. They are expensive to fix. If you want your car faster, push the gas pedal to the floor, it will downshift if you do that. Go on LS1tech in the transmission section. There are 2 or 3 reputable places that will rebuild a 4L60E. It will cost a minimum of $1500.00 to do so(shipping too) and that is if nothing is broken out of the ordinary.

Like Joelster said, you really don't want to do that to your automatic... thats why its an automatic... Just press the gas pedal... its that simple... unless of course you want to get that big repair bill.

Yeah my friend's brother (he drives a manual) blewo ut the tranny in my friend's car (auto) because he was shifting. When I found out that was the cause I pointed out, if you were supposed to do that there'd be a clutch for such purposes.

I don't mean to discourage you or anything, just telling you like it is. I went through 2 of them, and my car was pushing mybe 300hp on the first tranny and 325ish on the second one. They can be made VERY strong nowadays though. Honestly, what the aftermarket guys can do to them now, is light years beyond what they could do to them just 3 or 4 years ago. They are expensive though, and like I said earlier, MOST shops have not taken the time to learn how to PROPERLY build one. My local shop here which supplies a TON of local racers with th350's th400's etc, simply refuses to work on them. If you insist on shifting it, go look into having it built by a reputable shop. There are 2 or 3 on LS1tech. I don't know if FbodyCentral builds them or not, but maybe check with them, click the banner at the top. Always try to support the board sponsors!
