Default Engine Noises.

Hello,

I have a 1994 Firebird 3.4L V6 and ive got some questions.

When i start my car and its on idol, its fine, but when i put it in Drive, or reverse, there is a weird rumbling sound, my RPM's are fine. but its kinda groggy. its fine when i hit the gas though.

And then i turn on my A/C and it gets this worse, and theres a clicking noise. any information?

Thanks

Timmy

Have you checked your fluids? Tranny fluid, oil (not even sure why, but check it)... Also note condition of your transmission fluid.

... As far as the AC thing ... you compressor could be on it's way out. It'll pull a lot of power from the car if that's the case.

I bought it used, it has 157,000 miles on it, but it runs really smooth.

I just changed my oil, i used 10W-40 but someone told me to use 20W-50. I added some tranny fluid a few days ago, because it was it was a little low.

It only makes the noise when im in either reverse or drive and at idol. When im in neutral or park its okay.

wonder if your driveshaft is rubbing on something..... There is a "cross brace" that GM puts under the driveshaft - it's a thin piece off sheet metal that can some times warp and come in contact with the driveshaft. It's four bolts to remove and everything's fine after that.

no, it's directly under the driveshaft, behind the transmission - looks rather useless... and I think it pretty much is. lol

Wow - here's an old picture! ... but it shows the suport. -- your exhaust can hit it, your driveshaft can hit it... and it's just a little bit of weight reduction.

Doubt it is rubbing the cross brace at all. If it is in drive and reverse only, you may need to just flush the tranny fluid and replace the tranny fluid filter. Or, the valve body is sticking slightly. Also, if you turn your A/C on and it hesitates a lot more than normal, it is because your a/c compressor is crapping out and drawing even more power to turn the accesories drive. Look into a used or remanufactored one, it is cheaper. Change out the plugs and plug wires on that thing mainly because of the mileage. Also change out the fuel filter and air filter as well.

Alright, well i changed the air filter the other day when changed the oil. Ill change the plugs and the fuel and tranny filter soon, and see how that works.

i listened to it on the way to school this morning, its more of a rumbling sound, sounds like the tranny.

Wish I could actually hear the noise... I've never heard of a transmission "rumbling" ... grinding, grating, squealing.... not really rumbling.

But just make sure you tell us what it is when you find out.
