Default Good deal?

I looked at 92 Firebird to day and was wondering about a couple of things.

It has a V6 ( guy wasn't shure which one and i forgot to get the vin) the oil on the dip stick looked ok but it hink it is leaking. from the front near the top of the engien it lookeed like it was leaking doen the passanger side. It could have been coolent (did not check, Realise i should have. I am not much of a mechanic) The coolent reserve tank was about empty. There was an oil stain in the street where he had it parked. The car seemed to run fine and shifted good. It has 140k miles on it. Are these some signs of soemthing major or just normal?

He is askin $2200 for it and the passanger side window motor needs replaced. The interior is in decent enough shape, with minor ttop leakeage. Was thinking about offering $1800, any sugestions?

If the body, tires, interior are in good shape and if it sounds and runs good than it would be a good buy for that price. As for the leak that depends on whats leaking and where its coming from.

Definately want to find out which motor is in it, the 3.4 or the 3.8, HUGE difference.

But, at 140k, and its leaking, be ready to drop more money into it rather soon. Honestly, i'd try and find a LT1 with around 80k, and spend the extra 2.5k before you have to dump that in the v6 in a rebuild.

The leak looked like it was coming from the top of the engien. If it is anything like the 2.8 that was in my 85 camaro it would be above the water pump.

I am pretty shure it had TPI injection, if that helps determian the engine size.
Is their a quality issue between the engins as far as reliability or is it just speed and power diffrences?

Thanks for the input guys.

I just read this with horror. $2200.00 for a '92 with a V6? Dude, move on. You could spend under 3G for a decent Formula/IROC or right around 3-3500 for a 4th gen LT1 car.

Never realy was a fan of the forth gens. I havn't realy diven one but i have ridden in them and I always had trouble telling where the front stoped. Maybe thats something you get used to. If thats all i can find, then I might consider it.

Also dont mind the V6 a whole lot. Cheaper on gas and inssurance.

Both of those are not true. I would get the same insurance rate for a v8 as my v6. And it is proven the v8 gets better gas mileage than the v6, weight to torque ratio.

Things must have changed scince I had my Camaro. The insurance guy told me a V8 would have been more and that if it was a Z28 they wouldn't have covered me.

With the gas milage I just though it would have been better. Good to know.

It depends on your state with insurance rates. My 1995 V6 is at 103 a month in NY as a single male and 22 years old, a LT1/LS1 would be a bit more, but too much where it would break the bank or anything.

If you still would like a V6 then by all means get one, they aren't horrible cars just nothing powerful. But as Joelster said you can definitely find a much better deal, especially if you're looking at V6's.

Check craigslist around central PA and see what the average is for the V8 and V6 third gens and then decide.

Yea a 4th gen V-8 can get into the mid 30s on the highway. A v6 struggles to get high 20s around here.
