OK, it's getting to be my first winter with my V6 2000 firebird. It has the A4 transmission and recently I've been noticing I might have a problem. When I get up in the morning and it's cold... I go to start my car and it feels like the transmission slips. The car pulls forward just a bit and then stops. This is just starting the car and not putting it in any gear. Then when I put it in gear, there's a slight hesitation and then the car goes, shifts hard into second and then I'm fine after that. It only happens when the car is cold cuz after the initial take off, it doesn't happen again. Any one have any ideas if I have a problem or is this just normal????
Thanks Kyle |

sounds to me like you are having tranny issues, but you need to let your car warm up to ATLEAST 150 degrees before driving it in cold weather. I know it means getting up or ready 5 min. earlier, but you gotta do that to give the fluids time to heat up and circulate properly. I think you are having stall converter issues, IMO.

Well I've never had to start my car (2000 Firebird aswell) in weather lower than probably 30 degrees (adding in wind chill) but it certainly does not pull foward and then stop when I start it up, so it's not a natural problem to have. I'd put my money on it being a tranny problem. But keep in mind what 1NCZ28 said about giving the car a few minutes to warm up. Besides, that gives you the ability to turn on the defroster when you get in so that you can actually see for the first few minutes of driving.

With the warming up.... this slipping forward is happening when I crank the car. So I can't let it warm up cuz it does it when I try to start it. May be unrelated, but there's a high pitched squel when I do it too. But I figured that could be a belt.

Idea. Take it to a tranny shop, talk with the manager, ask him if it would be O.K. to leave it there overnight. And ask him to crank it 1st thing in the morning and see what he thinks. He might just be giving you a free consultation. If it's a non-expensive fix, have them do it. If it's gunna cost some cheese, get a hanes book for your car, buy the part(s) from Napa and do it yourself.

When it comes to transmissions, im definately no professional, its the only thing on my car that was built by someone other than myself. But, in this case, I believe you are having tranny problems. Firstly, I hope you've at least checked your transmission fluid, slipping like that is a common problem with low fluid. Now, the starting the car in the morning problem, before your driving, is not related to the tranny; you'll have to give me more details on that to give you a better idea of the problem.
If I were you, I would just take it and have the tranny flushed and the filter changed. Thats your best way to try and get out without a new tranny. |
