Default Cost vs Engine size

FOr those who have built there car from the ground up how did you make the decision on which engine to go with. The options are unbelievable. I am looking to get at least 800hp to the wheels. Trying to decide to go with a conventional 350//small block or stroker, a big block, or an LS1 is is very hard. In the end which engine will be cheapest to build to get to that power level. I havent decided on a power adder//vs mega cubic inches either. I am very good with nitrous and use it alot, but turbo's are now to the point that if built right they can be more consistent. However a mega cubic inch engine can make that power level on the motot alone. The car will never be driven on the street whcih makes building it so much easier. I was thinking that going with a conventional small block would probably be the cheapest and easiest but I want to hear from someone who has done it.

I wouldnt say the small-block would be the cheapest/easiest, especially at the power levels you want (800). That would be a VERY nasty small-block with all top-shelf stuff, offset lifters, shaft mount rockers, small-base circle cam for big cubes, clearanced/filled block, 18 degree heads (at least). A big-block could make that power all day long. Your cheapest route would be a stout 496 cube big-block (a 454 with a stroker crank), with a strong bottom end, a set of $2000.00 AFR 315 heads, and whack it with a 250 shot. The motor could make around 550-600 all day long with a good cam N/A. Look around for stroker kits (496), they are everywhere, and they are very reasonable. Ohio Crank has some killer kits available.
