I wouldnt say the small-block would be the cheapest/easiest, especially at the power levels you want (800). That would be a VERY nasty small-block with all top-shelf stuff, offset lifters, shaft mount rockers, small-base circle cam for big cubes, clearanced/filled block, 18 degree heads (at least). A big-block could make that power all day long. Your cheapest route would be a stout 496 cube big-block (a 454 with a stroker crank), with a strong bottom end, a set of $2000.00 AFR 315 heads, and whack it with a 250 shot. The motor could make around 550-600 all day long with a good cam N/A. Look around for stroker kits (496), they are everywhere, and they are very reasonable. Ohio Crank has some killer kits available.
