Default How hard is it to swap out an automatic transmission for a manual?

There is a 1992 firebird for sale by my house. I know that it is on its second engine and transmission, and it has a 5.7 in it and the transmission is automatic. The car itself is a deal and I'm seriously considering buying it but before hand i would like to know if it is extremely difficult to swap out the automatic transmission for a five or six speed manual. If anybody has any information that would help I would appreciate it, thanks.

the t-56 is a great tranny.... i prefer it. Its a bit heavier but alittle more heavy duty and have 6 gears is great. I miss my 95 Trans Am

T5 5 speed - 75 lbs
T56 6-speed - 115-129 lbs (depending on gear ratio)

not a huge difference I don't guess...

Though a T-56 can withstand the unforgiving hit of a nitrous caused 600+Tq on a drag strip with slicks. A T-5 might survive doing that, a few times, then spill it's guts.

a t-56 is def the better route. The T-5s arent that great and are weak. If u do get a t-56 get one from and LT1 car. I hear they are the better one.

I know a guy that has broke every part on his car but his t-56 never gave him a problem. Altho he managed to break it , this was after years and years with over 100k on it
