Default Some RS Camaro Questions

I've got a friend looking at an RS Camaro and I've got a few ?s for you 3rd Gen guys.

The RS is a 92 with the 3.1V6 and an Auto Trans.

What Rearend and Transmission are in these cars, and does a 350 bolt up?
I would think if its stock it would be a 700-R4 or 4L60 or am I wrong?

Heres the car in question:

The Car looks solid and everything but he basically wants this as his first project car. He wants to throw in a 350 or variant of one in it and we're wondering what can be kept and what has to be changed.

The 3rd gens used a 700R4 regardless of model as the automatic. Unless they changed that, but I can't see why they would have. Ideally they would wait for the new model year in '93. The 700R4 was used for the 350/305 as well, so yes it will bolt up. I'm not sure if the internals are as strong, though.

Honestly, I'd look for a Z28 as a project car, the RS Camaros have some weak springs/axles. Put a heavy SB in there (compared to the v6) it will droop the front suspension a good deal. Turd gens are very flexy, add on t-tops and it flexes more than a bow-flex. Subframe connectors are a MUST.

The automatic tranny in a 92 would be a 4L60. Its basically still a 700r4 but in 91 they started calling them 4L60. No the V6 tranny will not bolt up to a V8 you will need a tranny from a V8. The rearend is probably a 10 bolt.

The rear end is a 7.5" 10 bolt with 3.23 open ended gears in it. That car you're looking at is identical (mechanical wise) to mine.

That RS is located really close to me. If you would like I could look at it for you since you're in Buffalo.

If you want to that would be cool. If its out of your way don't bother. One thing that the owner said was the floorboards are starting to go bad. I doubt you'll be able to see it but if you can that would be a good place to look.

If you can go and get pictures thats cool, if not its alright.

the only real difference between the 4l60 and the 700r is the syncros and the servos. And the 4l60 has stronger internals.

The bell housing for the v6 and v8 is different.

Unless you plan on keeping this car a v6, I would not suggest starting with it. You could get a decent v8 for not much more than that... (well around me you can... not so sure about up north)
