Need Ideas!
Ok guys, heres the deal. I have about 8 grand saved up to do an engine build on my 2002 camaro SS w/ a T-56 6 speed tranny. I want the most power possible while still keeping my car streetable. I know i want to do heads, cam and pretty much the rest of the top end. First off i dont know what cam and head combo to use. Like i said, i want alot of power while still keeping in streetable. So throw your ideas out. Tell me what you guys would do and what parts to use!

ok, just talked to a guy down in NC and he works at a shop down there and they said they did an entire top end rebuild on an LS1 and did a cam swap and he said they went pretty aggressive and made 425 to the wheels. now i know SLP makes a 400hp kit and i duno if i want to pay 11,000 for pretty much heads and a cam to only get another 25 hp out of the setup. im hoping to be around 500 to 550 without touching the bottom end if thats possible. which evan from NC said you cant do. ANy help?

Reaching 500hp without boost on an LS1 is VERY tough, it will take a lot of fine tuning and part swapping. And without touching the bottom end is pretty much impossible. Typical cam/head swap will take you to mid 400's at best.

For 8 grand I'd buy a LS2, and swap the heads for a pair of ported L-92s and a matching intake, and a cam in the 220-230 duration range. That should get you close to 500, and be very streetable. getting over 425 wheel with a LS1 and not having it be rather gutless is done only by making it a stroker. Or with a blower.
The best "streetable" setup I have seen is a pair of AFR Mongoose 205heads a FAST 90MM intake, ported of course with a matching TB, a cam in the 200 range with an aggressive ramping and a lift of .550-.600
That of course is with some good longtubes and a capable catback.
Making 500 to the wheels will take 12:1 compression, and spinning the engine way past whats' safe, letalone sane. There has been one person that I know of that has done 500WHP with a stock displacement LS1, the bottom end was all forged though. And he revved to 8500.

Why not go to GM's web sight and order an LS-6? Now you don't have to go looking for as many parts.

Build a texas speed forged 370ci, for just over 2 grand you get the short block, crank of choice, rods, pistons, rings....then buy the TSP "giant" cam, and a set of terminator heads and that will whoop some serious ass all for about 6 grand after all the little things get added in. They have N/A 370ci LS based motors making mid 500's to the wheels all motor.
