I just bought a 1979 Camaro with a 350 engine and it runs great but for some reason the guy removed most of the Air Conditioning components. So I am on a quest to replace the air conditioning in this car and dont know where to start because I cant tell whats missing. I bought a manual at auto zone and it lacks a diagram for the A/C system, if I at least had a picture I could tell what I needed. There are some empty brackets where I assume the compressor or something went. Anyways, can some one point me in the right direction to a diagram, parts list or anything so I can start rebuilding?
Thanks! |

I would need some pictures first, but more than likely, yes the compressor is gone, hopefully the brackets are there, but when you put it all back together, I would suggest a new accumulator (drier as some are called) and I would put a new orifice in it as well. if you've never done any of this stuff before, find someone who has and can point out all the stuff and help, you need some oil to go in with all the new parts as well as converting it to R-134a, as well as evacuating it well before charging it too. I have done a LOT of ac work and it takes some experience to get it done right the first time so it will last. feel free to email me if you need.

The a/c system on all vehicles are really close to the same. Try going to the local junkyard and look through the cars till you find one who has a complete A/C system you can take a picture of. You might even get lucky and find a F-body with A/C.
Bettter yet post up here for someone to take some pictures for you showing the A/C system so you have something for reference. |

The main components are
Compressor, Condensor, Evaporator, drier and hoses. In that car, Evaporator is on the passenger side firewall in a fiberglass box, there's no mistaking it really it is a huge box with aluminum tubes coming out. The condensor is in front of the radiator, looks like a thin radiator sort of, Drier or accumulator is an aluminum canister deal. There is also a POA valve on top of the evaporator box, you can buy a replacement part that updates it to use common parts. It is expensive, but so is a POA valve. Here's a diagram for a '72 firebird, should be similar Last edited by Revhead; 10-09-2008 at 07:29 PM. |
