Default Electrical Dummy looking for Electrical Genius

Greetings;I have a 1980 firebird esprit that I have been building for 5 years. It's ready for the road except for an electrical problem. The problem ; the low beams work fine, If I disconnect the low beams the high beams work fine, but when the low and high beams are connected at the same time they begin to flicker and flash within 20 to 24 seconds. If I leave them on longer they go out completely . Turn them off till they cool off and they repeat the flicker cycle . Not blowing any fuses or bulbs. Have installed new light switch, dimmer switch, turn signal switch ,emergency and turn flashers. I've cleaned and re-connected all grounds( that I could find). This car sat for 7 years before I got it so that's a total of 12 years down time . There was a problem that changing the switches seemed to fix; With the engine running, the park lights on, and the left turn signal on, the ignition switch would not kill the engine. The engine ran to the pulse of the blinkers. On Off On Off On Off. To kill the engine you had to turn the ign. switch to the off position(it's still running) then shift the blinker selector to the neutral position(killed engine). I'm that headlight problem away from getting a Texas inspection sticker and driving through down town to watch the heads turn. I've (myself) rebuilt the eng., auto trans, rear end, suspension, body work(hail storm victim),paint, new interior. I say this because I know some of you will understand exactly where I've been and what I've been through. It's been a labor of love but right now I would love to meet that electrical genius who will make my dreams come true

honestly. sounds like you have had a bunch of electrical problems, I would just rewire the car. especially if something is overheating and could possibly start a fire. i know how it is to build your own stuff so i wouldn't want my car starting on fire. I wouldn't be able to help you without looking at it thought. thats just how i am.

Greetings to Korndogg and camarobuff88; Thanks for you're response. I bought this car from a man who said the it had belonged to his " Doper daughter", his words not mine. "Her doper boy friends and their doper friends kept it running for her." When I bought the car the steering wheel was off. I asked about it and was told that there was a problem with the blinkers and the lights. The man didn't lie about that. When I dismantled the car I baggied and labeled everything including every single wire and where it was( seems that just kept the problem alive). I guess Ya'll are right and I'll need to start at the beginning. I've already taken the wrap off the wiring harness and it looks like a family of Doper spiders are living under the dash. Found several splices( you know - green to yellow - blue to orange) I never say never and I don't give up. Again, thanks. P.S., I'm still waiting for that electrical genius.

damn sounds like you got a nice little mess they started for you. sorry to hear that. but yeah, i just think it would be better in the long run because first of all, everything would be working and secondly you would hve brand new wires and fuse box. i wish i could help more but im one of those guys that has to look at something in person to be able to fix it. i hope someone could possibly come along and help you better.

Well, there is a lesson to be learned. I changed all the switches(not because they were bad but because they were 28 years old). You know about that ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. HA . Now I.m going to go with " IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT." The first switch I replaced was the headlight switch. I didn't even check the lights till I changed all the switches. You know better safe than sorry. HA. After checking all the circuits, unwrapping all the harness to make sure there's no shorts or broken wires, everything kept leading me back to the the headlight switch - THE BRAND NEW HEADLIGHT SWITCH - THE BRAND NEW HEADLIGHT SWITCH MADE IN CHINA. I put the old one back in and everything works fine. I've laughed till my jaw aches and my sides hurt. I hope someone learns something from this experience. Keep on laughing complaining doesn't help.

splice i hate more than when they put a fbody on truck frame splicing is rediculous just run the appropriate length of wire and create seperate grounds for seperate circuits... and same for power dont tap into other power sources run a new relay thats why there "blanks" in the fuse boxes and it also other than being more appropriate and safe it looks neater and more skilled just my $00.02 but yah that does sound like a hurendous mess hope it goes well
