Default Transverse muffler vs. dual muffler

Hi all,

I'm hoping one of you can help me with my muffler issue. I have a 1970 firebird with a transverse muffler (one muffler with dual pipe going in and dual pipes coming out) which I really don't like. I've always had cars with dual mufflers and I prefer that setup over what I currently have, it just looks better in my opinion. My question to everyone is if it's possible to switch from the single transverse muffler to dual mufflers? Also, what are the pros and cons of doing so?

All of the aftermarket exhaust systems I've looked at, offer systems for my car with both types of mufflers. The main difference is that the transverse mufflers systems are more expensive.

Well, if you value your ground clearance the transverse is the way to go. Since you have a '70 you won't need to run a converter so all you would have running under the car is piping which doesn't take up much space.

The only bad side of the transverse muffler setup is you are very limited as to the style of muffler you can use. With the standard dual exhaust, you can pretty much use whatever you want. I think the standard exhaust is the way to go if you're after performance, though.

Go with the standard duals hanging low! Opens up your choices immensely.
