The Red one is an 1988 LX Coupe it has a mild 331 with AFR 165 heads, cobra intake and a vortech S trim, it puts down 485/481.

After my camaro is done it will smoke all of these
any reason you are going with a powerglide or th400?

Because it's popular and bolts right up I'd imagine.

In a car like that Id rather have a T-56 or something with a bit more gear... IMO

I dunno man, lots of people prefer the stupid proof auto transmission for a drag car.

If the 331 ever lets go, a LSX swap would be the next combo (probably a forged LS3 with a direct port kit on it!)

Consistancy and drivetrain breakage bieng the main factors.

See above.

Within the past two years in the Coupe and the Cobra we have been through 8 clutches, 3 Transmissions in the coupe, and broke the 3-4 slider (syncro assebly) and broke the input shaft on the T56. We also snapped an axle and broke a differential carrier in half.

The Coupe now has an Astro Performance Super T5 (or A5). It is bieng used in NMRA real street cars running 9s and pure street cars running 10s. (so was the G-Force T5 that ended up in pieces )

All of these broken parts are in cars making just under 500 RWHP.
Now add another 300-400 more to the tires. A manual shocks the drivetrain so hard.
With an auto the drive train is pre loaded at the launch so it is a lot easier on parts.

Wait wait wait.... you broke a t-56 with only 500hp? Man that musta been a real turd of a transmission. I've been abusing the hell out of mine on and off this summer. (200 shot) And it still shifts fairly smooth. (3rds starting to kinda get notchy when its cold.)

The gears in the trans did not break, the keys in the sliders are stamped steel and are very weak. The 3-4 keys take the worst beating and are a pretty common failure in a T56. Sometimes they will crumble and end up sticking to one of the magnets in the bottom of the case. As for the input shaft, the shitty fords come with a 10 spline unlike the GM's 26 spl.

Our T56 now has billit 3-4 slider keys, bronze 3-4 shift pads, all new blocker rings, and a 26 spl input shaft. Like the late GM trans (01 and up?) the Cobra T56 already has a steel 3-4 shift fork.

There are cars running 8s with a T56, with the right upgrads they can take some real power. Those cars running those times are constantly breaking and going through clutches.

Here is one of the broken T5s. It sheared all of the dog teeth off of third gear, the 3-4 slider and shift fork exploded
