Default Memphis TN//Beat The Heat

This is Kevin/ Hayabusa. I live in Memphis TN and am a Police Officer here. I am the President of the Memphis Chapter of Beat The Heat. For those who dont know what that is we are officers and Firemen who provide and chance for teens and young adults a place to legally race there cars and also get to race against modified squad cars. Here is a web site you can go to find out more Beat The Heat, Inc. - Racing For Education and here is a forum to get more info and ask questions Beat The Heat, Inc. - Racing For Education
You can go in and find out where we will be and you can come out and race against us. I will be starting a TN web site and when it is done will post it here. BTH is associated with NHRA and currently we starting to associate with several other orginizations including Pinks. You will see us at all the Pinks events although we may not be racing.

Currently I race a fairly modified Dodge SRT4 (dont flame me for racing a 4 banger)that is running in the mid to low 11's depending on if I am running nitrous. My wife races a 1986 Crown Vic with a 351w. We are in the process of looking for a Camaro or Trans Am/firebird to replace the Crown Vic so she can race in Pro Cop, 10.99 and faster. We have not decided on a year or a model yet. She likes everything from the first Camaros and Pontiacs up to the LS1 powered cars. SHe prefers the Trans Ams in the 93 and up cars and if we get on of these years it will be an LS1 powered WS6. However she really prefers the earlier years of both cars. More than likely we will be getting an 80's model car for money reasons. The car will be completly rebuilt for drag racing only. We want to spend as little as possible on the actual car and dont care if it even has a motor as we plan on scrapping about every stock piece on it. Our budget for the complete build not including the car is around the $20,000 range.

Anyways I am glad to be here and if anyone has any suggestions let me know. If anyone is interested in learning about Beat The Heat let me know. If there are any officers or firemen who would like to learn more or join let me know and I will help you get started. And so you know aside from the money spent to buy the car and the trailer everything you spend on the car and anything else associated with BTH is 100% tax deductible. So if you buy a body and then spend $20,000 fixing it up you have a $20,000 tax deduction.

Welcome to F-Body Online Kevin. Looks like a very cool idea you guys have going in Beat The Heat.

No flames for a SRT-4, I test drove one a couple years ago and liked it, just not a fan of FWD enough currently to get one, and didn't really have the money for it anyways

If she likes the 4th Gen (LS1) Trans Am/Firebirds, I wouldn't look for a WS6 if you're gonna tear it down and build it up. Just look for a basic Firebird, could save quite a bit of cash. There is no doubt that 3rd gens are going to be cheaper, but if you keep your eye out you might be able to find a 4th gen at a reasonably low price if it was beat up, wrecked.
If she likes the 3rd Gen's more, then I'd say go with that because they'll be cheaper as you said, and you'll have more selection in terms of actual cars to choose from. The 4th Gens are a hot commodity right now and prices explain that.

That's pretty cool Kevin. Big thumbs up. Hopefully the more places that do stuff like this, the less we'll have illegal street racing. One can hope anyway.

We have members all over. If you were still in TX most of our members are there. I am not sure about NC but we are having our first race in WV this May. Thats quite a drive for you though. Also our world finals were in Chattanooga last year which is fairly close depending on where you are. If you are closer to Knoxville we have members there to. If you are interested I can find out who is closest to you and maybe they could help set up a race near you.

Information is always good. I'm sure that Fayetteville motor Sports Park would do something like that.

Welcome to the site 'busa. I'm all for events like Beat the Heat. Its' a chance for street racers to get legit slips. And to take it off the streets, too often street races are hacked together and people are put in danger.

Yes. What got me into the whole thing was an incident about 7 years back. I worked the third shift and worked an area that had street racing to the max. There was one street that was completly industrial. It was like a ghost town on the weeknds and at night thousands of bikes and cars would gather to race. I knew alot of the people who went there and would cruise through the area on duty just to make sure things didnt get out of hand. At the time I thought what harm could it cause. I was young, fairly new to the force and very naive. They didnt even stop the races when they saw me coming. Then one night a young guy on a Hayabusa lost control going well over 120mph. He went straight into the crowd wounding over 50 people and killing 6. When I got the call I knew something bad had happened as we never got calls down there. When I got there the only people left were the wounded and dead. Out of the thousands of people who gathered there to watch not one person stayed to help these people. Not a single person thought to try and help these people. At that point my life and my idea of life changed. My belief in the good of people changed too.

Now if I find people street racing I deal with it on the spot. I go to schools, community centers, scout troops, etc and give lectures about the dangers of street racing. I dont just lecture though. I provide these people a place to go and race in a safe and legal means. Teaching is useless unless you provide and alternative which is what I, and Beat The Heat does. If you know anything about the NHRA you know that is what the NHRA was started for. To provide the average person a place to race legally. However the NHRA has long since changed directions. The average person either cant race in the NHRA or is intimidated to try. We provide a place for anyone with a license and a car to race legally. We have cars in Beat The Heat that run as slow as 18 seconds in the quarter mile to as fast as 6.8's so there is someone you can race against no matter you skill, or your car. We also provide a chance for people to race each other removing there need to race each other on the street. However street racing will never go away. I remember what it felt like when I was 16 to pull up at a light and have the car beside you start revving its engine. My first car was a Nova with a 402 big block and I can say I did some stupid things. Luckily I lived to be able to help try and stop what I once did myself. Street racing will never go away, however hopefully we can curb it enough to save some lives while at the same time still providing that feeling you get when you get to line up beside another car and see who is the best.
