Default How do you clean out your engine compartment

well guys i just bought myself a 01 camaro ss slp and it needs a good cleaning and detailing under the hood. This is my first newer car that i have ever owned with my 66 el camino i just spray everything with degreaser then hose it down spray it out with a leafblower then detail. But with a newer car that seems like a stupid thing to do. Any suggestions?

Well, on the newer motors such as your LS1, there are alot of sensors that dont take too well to degreaser or water in general. Dont be afraid to splash them with a little water, but spraying directly on a sensor is a good way to kill one. I think most of us just use the typical elbow grease method. Get under there with a rag and start cleaning away. All I typically use is water on a rag, with a second dry rag. Then to get a good finish for shows, I use motorcycle shine (it sticks to rubbers and plastics and makes it have a glossy finish, somewhat like tire shine.).

i let the car run for a few minutes to get it warm then i spray it down with purple power, let that sit on the motor for a few, then rinse with low pressure stream of water(being careful not to spray the sensors and computer), after that wipe it down with some rags and use a good engine detailer,i use CD2

CD2? I've never heard of that before. Me, I just wipe everything down.

I think I'm going to have to go look for that while I'm at the parts store tomorrow picking up some new wires. I was using the wipes that the parts store sold to clean the engine compartment. I do my best to avoid water under the hood. Especially now with nice pretty parts. I'd like to avoid rusting them if at all possible.

I've always used soap and water under the hoods of all my vehicles. I've done this for 30+ years and have never had issues on the new stuff with all the sensors and wires. I've heard peolple on boards everywhere talk the same about worrying about water on the electronics. The problems I had were with the old stuff. Always tried to stay away from the distributors.

Regular water will not hurt under your car if you let it dry properly.

Steam cleaning however.... the vapor will seep under your sealed components. That's why I have a MSD ignition system right now.
