Default Rust forming, any advice

I've got some rust forming on the rear quarter panels. The paint is bubling a little (although you can't actually see the rust there I know its only a matter of time). I've got fairly high quotes so I may do a lot of it myself. Only problem is, I've never done anything like that before. Does anyone out there have any good tips or online guides that could help me out. I'm assuming I'll still have to get somebody to paint it, but if I could do the rest I'm sure I'd save a ton of money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

One word.

Sandpaper.

Not much more I can say than that lol. And yea, you'll have to get it repainted.

I don't think I said how severe the rust was. The paint has started to bubble, so I'm fairly sure there is essentially a hole that has worked its was from the back to the surface. I appreciate the suggestion, but I think it might be too late for sandpaper alone.

Well I've found that once rust starts to form it spreads fairly fast. My 84 GMC had rust forming on the roof, after a month the size of the rust patch nearly doubled. I say try going to a junk yard or locating new quarter panel. BTW, if you wanna slow the process of the rust spreading then store the vehicle in a closed in area so any dew from the night doesn't sit on the roof.

Well I don't agree with phate's suggestion of sandpaper. I'd grab a fine wire wheel and attach it to a grinder and be gentle. BUt then again you can also begin to tear into the metal that's damaged and have one hell of a mess on your hands.

If you don't' wanna do the entire 1/4 panel you can jsut cut the section out and bend some sheet metal in to fit. Thoguh you'll probably spend all day shaping it then welding it into place. That is if course if you know how to weld really well, after that you still have to grind down your bead so its' all flush. That's sometimes the cheaper way of doing things. But, if you can find a totaled Bird around you could pick up the rear 1/4 for a song and a dance.
