All it is really is the body "platform" letter in the VIN.

If you look at this you can see it.

So from 1967-2002 all Camaros and Firebirds are F-Bodies because the 4th letter in their VIN is a F.

Actually, it's the Car Line, not the Body or Platform. Every gen of Fbody has a different Body/platform. Same with every other GM vehicle.

The digit in the VIN is there because it is an Fbody, not the other way around.

I'm not sure how GM came up with each Line Code, but that is really all it is.
Like the Corvette is a Y-Body, Cavilar/Sunfire is a J-Body, etc...

Not an F, but it still registers as an 83 Camaro...

Not all of the F-Bodies have an F there. It depends on the production year of your car....
With yours being an 83, that digit was for the Restraint type instead of Car Line. They changed it to Car Line in 85 (mid 3rd gen)
