Default Thinking of buying another Trans Am

Well I just swung by the local Salvage yard and I saw a (98) Black Trans Am, Looking closer it's a hard top auto, and BONE stock. Also it has 170+K miles after asking the Yard Foreman. He said it drives good still but has a "severe" case of piston slap and the steering is loose. He's asking 5K for it and KBB says $4100. I'm really interested on this, should I go for it?

Also since I don't' know myself, what kind of issues will I be looking at down the road with a super high mileage LS-1?

Doesn't sound like a smokin' deal to me. It's not way too high, but it is kinda high. I think you'd be better off spending around 6500-7500 for a better running example that has a lot of little shit done to it, that nickel and dimes you to death. Like a lid, cat-back, maybe headers, etc....

Well look at it like this, it's BONE stock. It was a commuter car. It was maybe floored a few times a year if that. I wouldn't' buy a car that's had small bolt ons done to it. And I sure as hell wouldn't buy a car like mine with a nuts clutch and a huge cam.

I dont know about that one. I am not as knowledgeable about the 4th gen but you would already be paying $900 bucks over BB price then you still gotta deal with the piston slap and steering problem. Who knows how long the piston was slapping and if any other damage has been done! Might get more than you bargained for!

I think I'd look elsewhere. For $3500, I might take it. Not $5000, though.

Piston slap is common in higher mileage LS-1s mines been doing it now for a while.

That's what I was wanting to know, I am leery of it myself that's why I'm asking other people on this. The car was some lady's DD on the interstate from what I was told. I'm going to look into it more deeply here soon and see what I come up with as far as how well or baldly it's aged.

Doesn't sound like that good of a deal. If the guy would come down on his price then maybe. I rarely go by what KBB says because according to them my truck is only worth $800.

Look around elsewhere. It could be a nice project car, but tack on a new engine to your price and it's not the deal it looks like it is on paper.

Yea I'd love to see if the guy would take the engine and subtract it form the cost of the car.
