Question 400 motor with 350 Turbo swap to 700R4?

Anyone know if I can keep my Pontiac 400 and use a 700R4 tranny? I really like the thought of having the 700R4 because low gear (1st) is lower than the 350 low gear so I won't have to swap out my stock rearend gear ratio PLUS it has over-drive and that is nice to cruise at 70 and 1900-2100 RPM.

That being said, I was told the 700R4 BOP bolt pattern tranny would possibly work - Is there such an animal?

I understand I will have to change out cross member and mounts, and the length of the drive shaft will probably need to be adjusted.

What is my best bet / least investment to get an overdrive tranny in my TA?

Im guessing your 400 is a Pontiac 400 Big Block, and not a 400 SBC? Because if its a 400 SBC the 700R4 will bolt right up I believe.

As for the lower 1st gear Im pretty sure the TH350 has a lower ratio than a 700R4. The overdrive is nice for highway driving tho..

Default Pontiac 400

Yes, the 400 is a Pontiac. I have found a little help... The bolt pattern I seek is BOP, Buick, Olds & Pontiac. I was told the 200R was Buick's answer to the 700R and a Buick Grand National had the "heavy duty" 200R and should bolt right up. But I really know nothing about them and would rather use a 700R4.

As far as the gear ratio - It was totally hear-say. I don't have a clue. But in my mind I was already burrining rubber and twisting the frame from stop light to stop light and cruising down the hwy 70 mph @ 1900 RPM!

I would like to get a compression check on the 400. Can I do this with out the car firing up? What are some ways to tell if the motor is good without opening it up?

get a compression tester at your local part store. it will look like an air pressure gauge (because that's what it is). label plug wires so you don't get them mixed up. take out spark plugs and put this in the spark plug hole. then turn the motor over. unhook the power to the ignition first! do this on all cylinders. they should be within 10% of each other. for example, if 7 of them are between 95 and 110 psi and one is at 50 psi. you need a rebuild. this test will tell you if you have bad rings or burnt valves. though you won't know which until you take the heads off. don't know if there is a BOP 700R4. i would guess no. but you can get an adapter plate to bolt a BOP engine to Chevy tranny. i had a 200R4 in my 1984 Olds 98. it finally went out in 2004. 20 years, not bad.

Summit carries the adapter plates.

I just read the March 2009 issue of Car Craft. There is no such animal as a BOP
700-R4. 700-R4s only have a Chevy bolt pattern. A 200-R4 has both Chevy and BOP bolt patterns. Some of the Monte Carlo SS had 200-R4s. The article gives you all the gear ratios. The 200-R4s have closer gear ratios, so they shift smoother. The 200-R4s also have a OD gear of .67 to 1. The 700-R4s have .70 to 1, so the 200-R4s will run a lower RPM on the freeway. It describes how to build a 200-R4 to take 1000 HP. Yeah, 1000 HP. one of the better things about the 200-R4 is that you can run full throttle in overdrive. The 700-R4 shifts down to 3rd at full throttle. Get the March 2009 issue of Car Craft. It will answer all your questions.
