Possible return of the Camaro Z28

Rumors have been swirling the past month or so about the 2010 Camaro. Of course everyone and their mother knows the financial problems that GM and the rest of the automotive industry is in right now as well. This is why this news is somewhat surprising. There have been talks about the Camaro Z28 making a return, but no one thought it was in the works this early.
Hardcore GM purists and adrenaline junkies will surely approve of GM bringing back the Z28; especially in its new form. With a 6.2L LSA V8 (also powers the CTS-V) that is supercharged producing 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque, it would be knocking the SS moniker off of the top of the Camaro performance scale. While the Z28 has always been a purebred racehorse with a tuned suspension and setup, making it 556 horsepower, over 100 above the SS is a new idea. The Z28 will also house the 6-Speed Auto and Manual transmissions that are currently used in the CTS-V. This will surely be the fastest GM Pony car in quite some time, possibly even taking the cake over the ZL-1 from 1969.
But… lets back up a bit. Even though its said that this car is almost done, will GM even be allowed to produce it? With the bailout money giving GM a little bit of breathing room, will it really be wise to create a 550 horsepower car? Many people inside and outside of GM’s walls have mixed opinions. I’m personally all for it, but I guess you could say I’m a bit biased. Only time will tell if they actually produce the Z28, but it’ll be an interesting fight to see if they are able to pull it off with this economy.
